This alternative to Kegel Exercises may change your life
The yoga exercise called Ashwini Mudra works the vaginal muscles and the sphincter muscles of the anus. It is like the well-known Kegel exercise. The word ‘Ashwa’ is a Sanskrit word which means “horse.” The word ‘Mudra’ translates to “gesture” or “pose”. This Mudra gets it’s name in reference to the rhythmic pattern of squeezing, holding and releasing muscles much the way that a horse gallops.
Ashwini Mudra helps maintain tone of the pelvic muscles which can remedy incontinence, cramping, vaginal dryness and vaginal tone. This pose also increases blood flow to the pelvic area. Issues in this area are common during perimenopause, menopause and beyond.
To engage in Ashwini Mudra:
1. Sit tall, in a comfortable position, with the spine lengthened.
2. Contract the vaginal muscles and anal sphincter as if you are trying to keep from urinating.
3. Hold this pose for a few breaths and then relax for a few breaths.
4. Repeat 5 to 10 times.
5. Lengthen each contraction and relaxation as you become more comfortable with the pose.
